Maryam Jalali
In 1977, an Iranian female singer was a special guest on a very
popular television show in the country of Iran. She stood
alongside Faraydoon Farokhsad, a man who's shows popularity
equaled that of Johnny Carson's and the modern-day Jay Leno.
She sang a song, entitled "Paband" which was later released
on a compilation of Mr. Farokhsad's. Unfortunately, that would be
the last the Iranian public would see of this amazing singer for
nearly two decades.
That singer is Maryam Jalali, or as she was introduced on the
television show, "Sally"...
In the fall of 1992, Maryam decided to showcase her amazing
voice to the awaiting public as she released her first full-length
album entitled "Shaghayegh". Released on Caltex Records, the
album included classics such as "Niaz" and the title track
alongside a beautiful cover of Dariush's "Be Man Nagoo Dooset
Daram".
Despite the success of her album (record stores around the
country kept running out of copies), Maryam decided to focus
on raising a family alongside her husband, Majid Khostavan and
her son, Amir-Reza Khostavan.
In the summer of 2000, lifelong friend
Bijan Mortazavi approached Maryam about possibly
collaborating on a song he had written entitled "Faryad." The song,
released on his 2001 album "Voice of Silence," was an
international hit, yet the music
video created for the song never showed any of the singers, and
so the public kept asking "Who is this women?"
Is wasn't until the Fall of 2004 that Maryam, Majid and Amir-Reza
decided to fully concentrate on releasing an album.
In May of 2004, Maryam's breakthrough album, "New
Beginning" was released under Rumi Records
and her single "Nazokdel (Yek Zan)" hit the airwaves.
The response to Maryam's and her album has been nothing
short of phenomenal. In the short 2 years since the release,
Maryam has been on countless television programs, been featured
on the world-famous Radio Iran 670 AM (based in Los Angeles)
and has had great success with her three major concerts in her
hometown of San Jose, California.
With Maryam currently in the studio working on the follow-up to
"New Beginning," the future looks promising for the singer that
started her career that fateful night in Tehran.
